But, this isn't a horror movie. Special mention needs to be made of Jerry Goldsmith's classic score. It's one of those soundtracks that defines the movie it accompanies, and it simply wouldn't be Gremlins without his memorable theme. Far better than its sequel, Gremlins is still a fun way to waste a Saturday afternoon. For this special edition, Warner has cleaned up Gremlins quite a bit and while there is still some dirt noticeable on the print the difference between this transfer and the one is almost staggering.
The Audio There's a Dolby 5. The movie was released back in and really was never a big one when it came to sound so this should come as no surprise. Dialog sounds perfectly clear, however, and Jerry Goldsmith's brilliant score has never really sounded better, but if you want something to show off your new speakers this isn't it.
The Extras While the original DVD release of Gremlins was a completely bare bones release, this disc is a special edition that includes two commentary tracks as well as those deleted scenes that fans of the movie have always wanted to see. This fun track initially had me a bit worried as Mandel introduced himself in the Gizmo voice, and if he did the entire track like that it would be pretty annoying.
But he doesn't, and the commentary is quite a bit of fun with plenty of memories brought up from the production, and even some laughs from Howie shocking, I know. It's a very entertaining commentary to be sure. The Filmmaker's commentary featuring director Joe Dante, producer Michael Finnell, and special effects artist Chris Walas is just as interesting as the other track, if it is a bit less crazy with laughs. It focuses more on the creation of the effects, such as how things would be done differently today in the age of CGI.
Dante even comments on the score and some of his initial worries about it, until he remembered that Jerry Goldsmith was doing it. He also poses questions to the other two participants about the creation of the effects such as how they made the "egg" pods. Obviously, the other big attraction to the disc will be the ten-minutes of deleted scenes. These run as one featurette in non-anamorphic widescreen and are available with or without commentary from Joe Dante and the cast.

The co-star, Billy Peltzer, played by a young hip Zach Galligan gets his hands on the furry pet and immediately wets it, yielding a litter of new creatures.
We all know that Billy is seeing dollar signs in his head at this occurrence. He does need to work fast however. Why would anyone want to buy something that they could get for free from a friend who already owns one - sound familiar?
I know this is a silly rant; however, if you think about it, this is the plot of Gremlins 2! Now would be the perfect time to upgrade your VHS copy or even the special edition on DVD, if you were lucky enough to grab one a few years ago.
