Honourable exceptions are the firewall, which opens as an MMC snap-in, and the Family Safety controls, which as always are managed from a colourful web console. If all of this is starting to turn you off Windows Security, this next part might finish the job. Manual scanning is slow, too, and the predicted completion times seem to have no relationship with reality at all. At one point during our testing, the virus scanner was confidently telling us it expected to be finished in 13 seconds when, in fact, there was more than six minutes of grinding still to go.
Microsoft deserves credit for continually working to make Windows safer and for bringing antivirus performance up to levels that match the best paid-for security suites. And as Windows accumulates a growing range of security features, it makes sense to collect them together under one roof. Image 4 of 5. Perhaps the major saving grace of Windows Security is that the key modules politely disable themselves when you install a third-party alternative, while the firewall and other low-level protections continue to do their thing behind the scenes.
Good job, Microsoft by iwillneverstop Oct 17, Read all my 25 reviews. I started using Microsoft Security Essential mostly because of the ads in avast! Although the installation and the first update take a lot of time, the first scan runs fast and the system performance is not affected. Up to now, MSE is still good at protecting my stuffs from being infected by malware.
Keep it up Microsoft. Yes Posted Oct 17, for v2. Disappointed by desertjon Oct 11, Read all my 18 reviews. After reading all the positive reviews here for MS Security Essentials, I thought I would give it a try and was disappointed..
It performs weak on an XP system. It doesn't clean up after itself, leaving many scraps behind. It changed my browser settings and doesn't play well with AOL. It also disabled my System Restore The scan is fast but updates are very slow at times up to 2 hours. I have always trusted Microsoft in the past but this program is not for me. If you feel comfortable with Microsoft then install it. It is very light on system resources but be prepared for problems ahead.
No Posted Oct 11, for v2. Microsoft gets it right by ianmacm Jul 04, Read all my reviews. This is a well thought out piece of software. It is easy to use, light on system resources and is not prone to false positives. Many of the big name antivirus programs have become bloated, and slow down the computer by trying to do too much in a real time shield. Microsoft Security Essentials sticks to the basics, and is enough for most users.
Yes Posted Jul 04, for v2. Quite nice product by Bulasikci Jun 27, Read all my 3 reviews. I have MSE installed on 3 computers and on my labtop it found 2 trojans. MSE is a lightweight program which is known for its good on demand scans. However it's realtime protection is not as good so I would recommend using this program as backup just checking if your main security program missed something.
If you don't want to spend money use avast with it but if you have cash to spare get a Kaspersky license. Both programs don't hog memory. Yes Posted Jun 27, for v2. Gave up paid solutions - I never looked back. I've been running MSE for nearly a year now without any incidences on several systems.
It's fast, unlike all the other solutions I've tried over the years! Even the update signature files seem to update fast and transparently. I've tried many others, and recently gave up a subscription to Eset. At present, I have no intentions of even trying anything else. FYI: It's worth noting that I just installed version 2x, and it seems just as quick.
I can't say it's infallible, but so far I've never had anything "slip through. IMHO, a fast set and forget combination solution like this that doesn't get "in your face" is worth every penny. Yes Posted Dec 19, for v2. Excellent anti-virus! I used avast!
Then, about a year ago, I gave Microsoft Security Essentials a try. No regrets!! No futzing with registering the software, not a resource hog, has a scheduled nightly scan, automatic updates, easy to use, attractive interface, highly effective.
Yes Posted Dec 08, for v1. Problem with folders with lots of thumbnails by Leopolean Jan 05, Had to disable checking of jpg and gif files. Otherwise the computer would lock up with folders containing lots of graphics.
